Let us face it, the Indian parliament election of 2014 has clearly enrolled India among the countries ruled by their religious  majority  where all other religions have only a minority status.

The Bharathiya Janata Party, a party widely perceived to be  based on Hindu Ideology and agenda of Hindutwa has won a landslide victory in the election of 2014, the results of which were announced today. The party has won a clear majority Of 283 seats and their National Democratic Alliance a total of 337 seats.

It would hardly be of concern if the massive majority was spread across the country because landslides in politics are nothing to write home about.

It is the localisation of the un opposed power of the BJP, as is clear from the CNN IBN graphic which changes the nature of governance of India.
With Narendra Modi's Victory, India chooses to go back to the Power of One http://ibnlive.in.com/home_america.html

There are no representation of opposition in several  states in India, which comprise a large chunk of the Indian population concentrated on an equally large part of the Indian land mass. It is as if India has been physically divided again.

It is required to look back a bit to put what this means to the  politico religious status of India after this election and how India has been taken back 7 decades to the times of the end of British Raj.

The majority of the population of India are born Hindu, a religion which originated in the subcontinent and  spread and dominated it India, which was divided in several kingdoms for  thousands of years.

However India acquired a multi religious presence over the millennium by internal evolutions and occupation by various foreign influences, Muslims becoming a predominant minority, by the time the British Raj in India was established.

The British held a balance and peace among the diverse regions and kingdoms during their regime but their departure led to strong insecurity among the minority which led to the division of India, still leaving a large minority of Muslims in India.

The political establishment at the time of partition and independence, in order to keep peace  and harmony resorted to the ideal of secularism which was built in to the country’s constitution, thereby assuring the minorities safety and equality.

But this existed only in principle and successive governments had to resort to various forms of appeasement to ensure peace, eventually turning the minorities to vote banks to win elections to form governments.

However, real and sustained peace and harmony has remained elusive with several violent communal incidents occurring  from time to time, in different parts of the country.

It is widely agreed that the BJP could not have won such a sweeping majority without a significant number of the Muslims casting their vote for them in this election which is very surprising, given the communal polarisation to have occurred from a pre poll fear complex, fanned by various parties wooing and vying for the Muslim vote bank.

One explanation for this very paradoxical situation in the voting pattern is given in the secretive measures taken by Narendra Modi, the Prime Ministerial candidate of the BJP, in reassuring the country’s Muslim population of their protection and of equal socio economic opportunities.

It is stated that, Muslims from the Hindi speaking Hindu belt of Northern India were impressed by the development and job opportunities offered by Modi’s  Gujarat and expect to reap similar benefits in their own states, in return for voting Modi to power.

This is all in order as long as the core Hindutwa elements within the BJP and its supportive organisation of the RSS are willing to play ball with the game plan of Narendra Modi.
Such a situation, which for any thinking Indian is nothing but appeasement, may not be palatable to various castes and minority groups in the very same North  Indian region, which has propelled Narendra Modi to power at the centre.

In short, a lot depends on delivering by the Modi government and the BJP of the promised development and opportunities .

In reality, at least for Now, the secular republic of India  seems to have become another country in the world  where a government of the majority government has been elected to power.

It may take average Indians to recognise this reality , which they may even be willing to live with in exchange for the glory of development.

After all, there are several neighbouring South East Asian countries like Malaysia and Indonesia run by governments of the Majority religion and many others in the Arab region.

But for those who were born and grew up in an India with the notion of secularism at its heart, it certainly is a step back in to the colonial times.

  2. Hi Sreed. I read this post with interest. In your part of the world, religion plays a major role in politics, while in my country many people are trying to completely drive it out of public discourse or display. Interesting times we live in. Thanks for sharing this information.

    All the best,
    Leslie

  5. The BJP has been the second major party for some time hasn't it? So any major shift away from the current government means that it would be the BJP that would win. It seems as if it has not been the religious vote that turned the tide but a wish for economic change. I too hope that the promised opportunities and development occur.

  6. Hello Bride Sue,
    Many thanks for visiting.
You are right, the JP was the major opposition and a landslide is no big shakes in politics.
How that majority is localised is of concern. With similar localisation on the east coast
what is clear is the political chauvinism which has taken over the sub continent.
BJP can't deliver development without taking speedy executive decisions which is all but impossible for a central government with several states now behaving like warring neighbours.
