The problem with Canada is that it didn't have an icon, at least until the Vancouver Riots happened.
Despite its stature as one of the elite G7 group of wealthy and developed nations, its wonderful people, its vast area of beautiful land with huge resources and many other enviable attributes, Canada is still young and has yet to etch something on the collective psyche of the humanity.

Incidentally Canada is the only nation among the G7 without a distinctive iconic identity. Can you name a famous Canadian in two seconds? You know what I mean!
The US has its Kennedy, the British have their Churchill, the French their De Gaulle, the Chinese have their Mao, the Indians have their Gandhi, even the tiny Cuba has its Castro.
If you can’t remember names, you certainly can associate famous landmarks with nations. Again, the US has its Statue of Liberty, the UK its Big Ben, France its Eiffel Tower, China its Great wall, India its Taj and Italy its Tower of Pizza.
A quest for an icon of national identity is so important that young and developing countries like Dubai and Malaysia compete with each other and have spent vast sums to build buildings like the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building so far!
However, there are moments in a nation’s history, often changing the course of history for the whole world, which become iconic and gets in to the history books and young minds, to be remembered for a life time!
The bombing of the Twin Towers, Pearl Harbour and Hiroshima are deeply disturbing and painful examples. Events like these become unforgettable for the immense suffering to people that ensued.
Then there are beautiful moments like the first moon landing and the wedding of Princess Diana which become Iconic due to the positive feelings like the euphoria of success in achieving the impossible and the nostalgic joy and warmth of a fairy tale romance, these events imbibe universally.
These are the moments which have inspired Lois Armstrong to sing “What a wonderful world”, invoking comments from people like
"This song always brings tears to my eyes, but I'm never sad. Strange...”
I think such a moment has finally arrived for Canada in Vancouver. The photo of the young couple lying in the street and kissing, surrounded by riot police, which has gone viral and famous round the world becoming iconic of the 21st century, has indeed captured a very beautiful and poignant moment in human history!
